The
Nike-Smoke Sounding Rocket is a difficult
rocket to get detailed information on yet it is a
very popular kit with many manufacturers
offering it in their product line, quite
the paradox really.
It consisted of a Nike M-5 Booster with
a seperable ten degree nose cone filled
with titanium tetrachloride solution. This
left a 'smoke' trail in the sky, allowing
winds aloft to be determined by optical
measurement. The smoke actually being droplets
of HCl formed by the chlorides combining
with the water vapour in the air. Hundreds
of Nike Smokes and two stage Nike-Nike Smokes
were launched in the 1960's and 1970's.
